Chrysanthemums and dahlias are the two flowers most associated with fall, and both are at their peak: chrysanthemums are the classic autumn porch and funeral flower, while dahlias carry the deep late-season colour.

The fall palette

Fall arrangements lean into the season: amber, rust, burgundy and gold. Dahlia colours in that range are a natural fit, as are the warm bronzes and golds of chrysanthemums and the last sunflowers. Hydrangea heads, which can be dried and kept, bridge the transition into winter decor.

Garden bloom time is not the same as florist availability — a florist can stock many of these year-round because they are grown in multiple climates — but buying flowers at their natural peak in fall is a good way to get the freshest, most plentiful stems.

Chrysanthemums — "mums" — come in a wider range than most people expect: bronze, gold, burgundy, white, pink and purple, with several flower forms from the classic cushion pom-pom to spider and spoon forms. 2. Add three to five dahlias or chrysanthemums as the anchors.
3. Fill with a few sunflowers or zinnias in the warm range.
